Pathways to the Past
I created three video case studies for Tempo Time Credit's Pathways to the Past programme to act as a lasting record of the programme and to show its impact. Pathways to the Past is a Tempo programme in Neath Port Talbot, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It connects people to local heritage projects, creating pathways into volunteering, participation and community life while celebrating and preserving local history.

The brief
Tempo required a series of digital stories for their Pathways to the Past programme to showcase the development of individual volunteering pathways, showing the impact it has had on the people volunteering, the heritage organisation they are volunteering for and the local community. The videos were to be incorporated into the digital toolkit, that was being developed at the same time by another freelancer, that would act as a guide for heritage organisations to recruit and retain volunteers. The primary audience was potential new volunteers and heritage organisation staff who will use the toolkit and videos as recruitment tools. The video case studies of three pathways to volunteering were to focus on young people, diversity and collaboration.

The process
Over the course of six months, I attended three volunteering locations to document three unique volunteering pathways in the Neath Port Talbot area. I recorded interviews with individuals who lead the volunteer groups, key volunteer group members and Tempo staff. Ahead of the events, I prepared the questions I would ask them to learn about the progress they have made, what they plan to do next, what was special about the group and the location of their visit, and the impact it has made on them and the local community. To visually tell the stories, I recorded footage of the volunteering activity days by capturing the location setting and the events of the day. I edited the videos in Adobe Premiere Pro. The Tempo team gave feedback after reviewing the videos to ensure the core message was delivered and the brand was aligned with the digital toolkit. I provided quotes and images from the videos to the individual creating the digital toolkit too.
The outcome
The case studies are warm, inspiring and authentic. They show the personal transformation of the volunteers, and the positive impact the volunteering has on the heritage organisations and the wider Neath Port Talbot community. They connect deeply with the subject of heritage and community through the use of visuals of heritage locations as well as through the narratives told by the interviewees. The variety of case study volunteers and groups display the desired focus of young people, diversity and collaboration.
